It's not the most exciting topic but when you cannot open a can of tomatoes, it becomes an important subject. I wrote about replacing my Brabantia garlic press a few months ago and now the can opener from the set has given up too. It has been hard to turn for a couple years but cleaning and oiling it helped for a while. Lately though, I haven't even been able to turn the handle more than a few cranks before it is just too stiff to move. Add to that I am a lefty working a right-handed tool and I was just getting too frustrated.
I went back to the fancy kitchen supply store and asked that same lady to recommend her finest hand-turned can opener. She picked this WMF 18/10 stainless steel beauty from Germany and it felt like a weighty, quality piece of workmanship. I couldn't wait to make a spaghetti sauce or open a can of tuna!
Sure enough, it turns and cuts like a hot knife through butter. With an effortless turn of my wrist - the right-handed wrist to boot! - the blade whipped around the can and the lid was off. I plan to wipe this one down after each use (without water or oil to gum it up) and it is dishwasher safe. Hopefully it will last me the the 30+ years my Brabantia one did! It's a small thing but quality tools make all the difference, no matter the task and I think this highly rated and positively reviewed gadget was worth the $30.
