Like many quilters, I have so many UFOs or planned quilting projects I've had to put myself on a fabric shopping moratorium. (Unless, of course, it's a) Bonnie & Camille, b) an incredible deal, c) too cute to pass up!). The new little Spoolin' Around Table Topper kit I got from Connecting Threads fits two of the above criteria so I added it to my virtual cart when I was ordering my foundation paper.
The kit consists of some yardage and a few charm squares, as well as the pattern for the circular table topper. It was under $13 and has everything needed to make the project, including the backing fabric. The main reason I picked it up, beside it being incredibly cute, is that it is bound with bias binding. I really want to practice using bias before I attempt to bind my huge DWR quilt so this seemed like a fun opportunity to experiment.
Once I received the kit and read the instructions I realized it is going to allow me to practice my applique sewing as well. The spools are all fused onto the background fabric with fusible web and then stitched down (perfect). The only tricky part might be cutting out the big circles of background fabric. I can't use my Olfa Rotary Circle Cutter because it only goes up to 8-3/4" circles (the pattern requires 17" and 12" circles).
I'm sure it won't take me too long to assemble the cute table topper and I'll be test driving a couple of techniques for my big quilt. Not bad for $13 bucks!
I have finished all my DWR arcs now, plum and blue, and will start gluing down the edges. After that, I will be stitching tiny blanket stitches to applique them to the background fabric...probably until the fall! I'm heading out for summer vaca soon so perhaps the Spoolin' Around topper will be the perfect interim sewing task before I start the next phase of the DWR.
