The baby arrived and now I can share the Minky baby quilt I made for her. As I wrote on the weekend, working with this furry fabric has a few challenges but if the tips and guidelines I shared are followed, it's not that bad at all!
I wanted to keep things fairly simple for my first time out with Minky so I did a basic rag quilt pattern. I paired up Minky squares (alternating between light pink, dark pink embossed, and white) with gorgeous flannel and stitched an 'x' to secure the layers. I didn't use any batting in the middle since the Minky and flannel together are quite warm and definitely heavy enough for a baby.
Once all the squares were joined in rows and all sewn together, I clipped a fringe in every seam allowance. This allowed me to avoid having to do a binding as well as being very girlie and cute. It's not quite as fluffy as a 100% flannel rag quilt because the Minky doesn't fray but it is very soft and cuddly and I think it's really sweet.
One thing I intended was for it to be a larger quilt than it turned out. It felt like I sewed and sewed and didn't get any where! I have 104 squares but because there is a 1/2" seam allowance, quite a bit of the size gets eaten up. The quilt is great for the baby but I don't think she'll be taking it to college!
