I consider signing up for the new The Classic Double Wedding Ring with Gail Kessler Craftsy class to be an investment in my future. This popular quilt pattern is something I've always had in the back of my mind to do and the new course seemed like a good chance to learn more about it.
I was already familiar with Gail from her FREE Piece, Patch, Quilt class so I knew she would be the perfect person to teach this more complex design. She actually shares three different ways to piece the Double Wedding Ring: the traditional way, using foundation piecing, and using templates.
To be honest, the reason I was really excited to sign up for this course was the class kit. The foundation pieced quilt is shown with DOWNTON ABBEY fabric! I have been coveting this collection from Andover since it first came out but I couldn't find it. I'm a huge fan of the show and even though I realize the fabric really has nothing to do with the characters it's named for, I still wanted it! I had already purchased a ton of fabric for other projects and exhausted my quilt budget (I still have to share that with you!), but I couldn't resist this wonderful opportunity to get 21 yards of Downton Abbey fabric at a good price, PLUS learn how to make a Double Wedding Ring.
So I took the plunge and ordered the kit (but resisted the backing fabric with a picture of the Abbey for now). I know I won't get to this project for a loooong time but I have learned that if you don't buy these kits or fabric collections when they are available, they are gone forever! I have it all tucked away (the delivery box was HEAVY!!! There is a lot of fabric in the kit!) in a new, larger tote for when I'm ready to start. I might look at this as an on-going UFO and do a bit at a time concurrently while I work on something else. It makes a KING SIZE quilt, something I've never attempted before. I plan on using it for my own bed if I ever get it finished.
This was a special gift for myself. I'll call it a late wedding present! When I opened the box when the kit arrived I was so excited to see the fabric in person. It is gorgeous! There are cuts from the Sybil line, the Edith line, the Dowager line and some yardage from the collection. It has a beautiful hand - so soft and fine. I love it!!! The pattern is rated as 'intermediate to advanced' so I am going to take my time and really try to make this a new family heirloom quilt. I'm excited and nervous to start but really happy I have this class, and kit, in my 'to do' list.
