I am really enjoying all the great cutting shortcuts Brendan McDermott shares in the Complete Knife Skills, with Brendan McDermott (FREE mini-course!) from Craftsy. The grip and techniques are becoming more natural now and some of his tricks for certain fruits and veggies are genius!
Cutting up a ripe avocado is super simple using Brendan's method for halving the fruit and removing the large, hard pit. After it's out it is a cinch to slice or dice the avocado using a paring knife. I have eaten soooo much guacamole in the past few weeks! I must say I really lucked out with the bag of avocados I got: every one was perfectly ripe without being mushy or having those black veins inside the flesh. Homemade guac is one of my all-time favourite snacks and it was even fun to chop up the fresh cilantro now that I know the secret to that job too!
Another fruit I love to eat but hate to slice is kiwi. (I guess we're working on all the green things today!). Brendan's shortcut for peeling this hairy, fuzzy fruit is amazing and works like a charm. Funny thing is, you don't even use a knife! I will no longer fight to get that skin off a kiwi trying to use a peeler! Once the pure fruit is separated from its outer protection it takes seconds to slice or dice the flesh.
You can join Brendan's class for FREE and learn all his excellent cutting techniques, tips, and tricks. He is very entertaining to watch and you'll find yourself going to the store to stock up on stuff to cut. I really, really hope he comes back with a full-length cooking class because I will definitely be signing up for that one!
