The August block for the Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 class is an Applique Basket. This is a two part block. This month we made the basket and then in September we will make applique flowers to add into the basket.
The base of the basket is formed using 5 different fabric strips joined in a strip set and trimmed using the 60 degree angle on the quilt ruler.
The handle is made using a template and a strip of fabric cut on the bias so that it will bend around the curves. It is then appliqued onto the base fabric either by machine or by hand.
I used the blanket stitch on my Horizon to sew it down - I am not much of a hand sewer! I had a bit of puckering on the left side but overall and satisfied with how it turned out. I will probably just cover that part with a flower next month.
The points of my basket will get cut off once the block is joined with the others but I don't imagine that will be a big problem. This was certainly an interesting block to make and not really that difficult. Next month we'll make and add the flowers and then for the final block lesson we are going to be making flying geese for the perimeter of the quilt. November and December will involve joining the blocks and finishing the quilt. You can use the link above to join in the class if you're interested.
