The next project in the Free Bag-Making Basics: Reversible Tote & Zipper Pouch Craftsy class is the zipper pouch. Even though instructor Kristin Link gives great directions I always struggle to get those zippers in correctly!
It seems I can never get the feed dogs to grab the fabric properly at the beginning. The zipper foot seems too narrow for the feed dogs. It just frustrates me!
As you can see, the ends of my zippers are not finished well. The little tails are not secured. Also, each side of the zipper tape is stitched in a different place - one is quite close and one is further away.
The rest of the pouch is easy to put together but I had to try installing that zipper a couple of times. Ms. Link replied to my questions and I also got some tips from my 7700 group...seems a lot of owners don't care for the included zipper foot. I refuse to give up and don't blame the Horizon at all! A machine of this caliber should perform well with all its feet so I chalk this up to user error!
I tried out the pointers I read and gave it one more attempt on a mock sample. This time it worked MUCH better and I think I figured out the process. I also lengthened my stitch length which gave a more professional looking finish. Look how evenly the sides of the zipper tape are stitched! I hope I'll remember what I did the next time I use the zipper foot! My DD took the 2nd bag I made and uses it as a pencil case so that makes me happy!
The free class is a great introduction to sewing bags and installing zippers. Some participants said it was 'too basic' but I really appreciated learning how to make these projects from start to finish! You can use the links to go to Craftsy directly to check them out.
