A few years ago my DD bought some pink jeans with sharks all over them as an impulse purchase and they didn't fit from the get-go. They finally showed up in the 'give-away' bag and I just couldn't bear to send them off since she had loved them so much. I decided I would make her something with the fabric but as they were very small and very slim-legged, they didn't really yield much yardage once I cut off the hems and pockets.
I came up with this rag quilt pillow and I supplemented the shark pants with denim from some other old jeans I'd saved for patches. I managed to eke out enough for 6-1/2" squares and then I sewed them together in a 16-patch. I had to get creative with the backing to piece it large enough. I then snipped all the seams to get the fringe on the front and washed the cover to get it to fray.
I stuffed the pillow with some fiberfill (it looks a bit lumpy on the back still, until it's worked in, but overall I'm really happy with how it turned out). Even if DD never wore the pants she can always remember them now as they live on in her throw cushion!
