Here is the completed Lady Liberty quilt I introduced you to last month. Below are some photos and a video of the finished quilt. I had some challenges with adding the borders (my own fault for being away and forgetting what I was doing, how to do it, and sewing late at night when I was tired!) but it came together in the end. I love the secondary circles formed by the embroidery and the vibrant colours of the Batiks.
One thing I found really helpful when I arranged my blocks on the design wall was photographing them in black and white. This quilt is all about contrast and value and using the digital camera allowed me to really see what worked and what didn't. I was able to arrange the blocks in a way that maximized the effect the colours had next to each other.
I still have to tack down the binding on the back - something I am not really motivated to do since I used Wonder Tape to iron it down temporarily and since the back is no oil painting to begin with, I don't really care how it looks. I do want to wash the quilt though so I guess I'll have to get hand-sewing eventually!
I've mentioned a couple of times what a 'horror show' the backs of these embroidered pieces are. There are jump stitches and tie-offs and this time I took Eileen Roche's suggestion of using black and white patterned fabric as the backing to help camouflage the mess. It actually works! While it's still not something you would want to display, it definitely looks better than a solid or light backing fabric. So...do you want to finally see what it looks like on the back?
Oh, I know it doesn't look too bad from a distance. Here's a closer view...(good thing it's against the wall!)
And here's a video for my YouTube subscribers and you, if you'd like to hear me talk about it!
Amazing quilt friend. Just beautiful.

Oh wow that turned out so pretty! I actually like it in black and white too! :) Did Eileen name it Lady Liberty or did you? How big is it? Also, I think the best way to get the binding finished is to send it to me, since I enjoy hand stitching. I promise I'll send it back as soon as it's finished. Muhaha!
