My latest interest is machine embroidery and I've really enjoyed 'working' with and getting to 'know' Eileen Roche. First I took her The Machine Embroidered Quilt Craftsy class, and then I bought her book. After visiting her website I learned she is the founder and editor of Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine. I knew I had to get a copy!
I couldn't find it in Canada but since we were travelling in the States I found THE LAST copy of the Jan/Feb edition at Jo-Ann's. It was hidden behind some other stuff and I was so excited (after my initial disappointment at not seeing it) I grabbed it and actually said "yes!" out loud (geek).
It was kind of a double-fun issue since the sewing queen, Nancy Zieman, was on the cover to celebrate her 30th anniversary. I originally first saw Eileen Roche ON Sewing with Nancy and I know these two ladies have a long history.
I couldn't wait for our overnight hotel so I could read the magazine. Inside this particular issue, besides the enticing ads for state of the art embroidery machines, notions, and digital files (I'm weird, I like ads for things I am interested in!), were lots of fun and inspiring projects to try. I really liked the new feature for projects made in a 4"x4" hoop. It's so quick and easy to deal with the smaller, often ignored little hoop and I'm excited to try them out.
There are also informative 'reading' articles about the industry, techniques, and 'Ask the Expert' how-tos. But of course the most inspiring pages are the ones with the detailed step-by-step instructions for gorgeous embroidery. The sources of the digital files are listed for each project, along with the materials needed to complete it. In several, the digital designs are actually FREE - available to download for a limited time from the magazine's website.
While some of the projects are for more advanced levels and/or require the purchase of additional items, there are many that a novice could try using what they already have. I know I will be keeping these magazines in my library for later reference as my skills improve - after I try out the beginner projects. Oh, and that's right, magazineS: on our return trip I found THE NEW issue (March/April) chock full of even more great stuff. Ok, I'm sold. I think I have to subscribe! (and just did!) ;)
