Last month I wrote about my Superior Thread order and I decided to finally try it out. I had the cat quilt panels left over from my longarm class and realized they presented the perfect opportunity to try out the different threads. The panels are long enough that I can get a good quilt pattern going without stopping (like on a square block test sandwich) and I can try out different thread without worrying about the look of the finished quilt (because it will be donated to the SPCA).
I really wanted to try both the So Fine and the Bottom Line so I chose these 2 colours because they matched pretty closely. With the 'Try Me' special you don't get to select the thread colours so these were the only 2 of each brand that were similar.
The threads stitched out pretty nicely! They are definitely thinner threads than I'm used to (even though I think they are the same weight as Gutermann's cotton spools - maybe it's just because they are polyester??) and my stitches are pretty small to begin with.
I didn't have any thread breaking but I did have one episode of some weird thread ball issue - I'm not even sure what happened because the thread didn't break and everything seemed fine. Once I cleared that up I stitched along.
(This is the backside of the quilt, by the way!)
I have been practicing doodling my Angela Walters' swirls and finally figured out what I was doing wrong (starting the 'next' swirl in the wrong spot) and now I can't wait to use this design on a quilt! This exercise not only allowed me to try out my new thread but also practice this new design!
I'm really liking the idea of using the polyester thread for quilting. It is stronger, with less breaking, and this is a good thing for free-motion quilting. It helps with travel stitching as well to have a nice, strong, fine thread. I definitely want to get Angela Walters thread collection anyway so I'll probably add more Superior So Fine thread (maybe some larger cones!!!) to my next order. All thumbs up for this experiement!
