Awwww, I'm really sad the Craftsy Block of the Month has come to an end! For November, we learned all the finishing steps to completing the quilt top using the 20 blocks we made since last January. Amy Gibson shows how to add the sashing strips and a border. She then gives a few suggestions as to how to quilt the top after preparing the backing and final quilt sandwich. She was pretty pregnant in the November video (she has since given birth to twin boys), and seemed kind of tired and just 'done' with the whole process! She was really quite breathless too! As a mum of twins I can remember back to those last weeks, carrying around SO much weight - it's really hard growing two humans at once! She also told us there would be NO December episode...so that's it!
So, here is my completed top. I was really happy how it came together and that I was able to attach the sashing in fairly straight lines between all the blocks. The designs for each month were so colourful and busy I was wondering how they would look together in a quilt, but I think the sashing does calm things down a bit and offer a restful place for the eye.
While Amy used a print fabric for her backing, I thought, since I have no yardage from the Boho collection for backing fabric, that it would be the perfect opportunity to make a pieced back using the leftover fat quarter remnants and some more plain white fabric, using what I learned in the FREE CRAFTSY CLASS "Creative Quilt Backs". I think it will be really cool to have a bit of the front fabric on the back (I'm just a little worried about all those seams!!) and since the whole quilt was a learning project I might as well keep on learnin'!
If you'd like to take either FREE Craftsy class, the Block of the Month or Creative Quilt Backs, just use the safe links to the right of this post and they'll take you right to Craftsy and you can join for free. I love free!!!
It looks great, Angie! I'm impressed - and I'm sure you learned a lot of new techniques over the past year from Amy. And she's doing another block of the month on her website .... it's only $7.95 for the whole year. What a bargain! http://www.stitcherydickorydock.com/2012/10/the-2013-sugar-block-club.html
Can't wait to see it all quilted up!
