I've had this Disney Funsicle Kit by Ball for a long time and never used it. I finally dug it out and gave it a try. Wow! TOTAL SUCCESS!
The 'recipe' is just 2/3 cup of fruit puree mixed with 2/3 cup of unsweetened fruit juice, 1/3 cup honey (or sugar), and a rounded tablespoon of freezer jam pectin (in powdered form). After pouring the mixture into the adorable Winnie the Pooh molds using the included ladle and popping in sticks, you simply freeze for about 8-12 hours until solid.
My first batch consisted of thawed-in-the-microwave frozen strawberries with a bit of mashed fresh banana to make up the 2/3 cup. I used orange juice since that's all I had. I filled the 4-Winnie mold and had a bit left over so I ran and got my ancient popsicle mold (I wondered who else would have such a gadget in stock and know exactly where to find it in the basement depths!) and filled up a few more slots with the remaining mixture. We were so excited to try them the next day (since I made them late at night).
I tried the first ice pop and was shocked at the flavour! The banana flavour really came through (it was such a small amount) and the strawberry taste was really intense and fresh! They were just the right amount of sweet, too! They tasted just like those 'all fruit' frozen treats you can buy from the ice-treat cart vendor...but for MUCH less money! I immediately gave one to DS and the rest of the family when
they got home. Thumbs up from everyone! The only negative comment? "What happened to Winnie's nose????" (It's a little big!)
I'm going to pass on the kit to my niece since she's got 4 little kids. My older crew can enjoy the more traditionally shaped treats. I will DEFINITELY be making these again, varying the fruits and experimenting a bit...maybe even with my own home-juiced juice! Imagine how refreshing icy watermelon pops would be with fresh watermelon juice!
YUM! I think Dollarama had popsicle molds with their summer stuff - I'll have to check if they still have any. This brings back a very happy memory from childhood!
