One of the great tips I learned from the Pictorial Quilt class over at Craftsy was how to hang a quilt on the wall. It is super easy to add a rod pocket to the back of the quilt and use it to slide the quilt onto a curtain rod. While a rod is a more permanent choice for displaying a quilt, it also means bigger holes in the wall and a commitment as to the size of quilts you can hang. Another option is to use a thin piece of wood which can be hidden behind the quilt. This method shows no signs of any hanging device at all and only requires two tiny finishing nails in the wall.
I was quite proud of myself after my excusion to the lumber yard, selecting the best piece of trim for the job. I assumed unfinished pine was my only choice but it's actually thicker than I needed and more expensive - (because it is nice...sort of a waste since it won't be seen at all). Then I found some primed trim that worked perfectly. It was already primed white (again, good enough since it won't be seen) and was much cheaper! I then ventured to the 'shop' out back and the guy there cut it into 3 pieces for me - one for my sampler quilt, one for my pictorial quilt (both measured to end just inside the edge of the quilt), and a bit leftover.
I (ok, hubby) drilled 2 holes in each end. Then 2 little finishing nails in the wall and the wood just slips right over the nails. The quilts look great as if they are just floating and you don't see any hanging apparatus at all. Awesome!
Don't forget you can use the links to the right to go to Craftsy and join their free classes or sign up for the classes I've taken for 50% off! One of my favourite parts of the courses are getting the insider, pro tips and tricks you can only learn from someone who 'knows'!
How do you mount the quilt to the trim?
