I was really looking forward to July's Craftsy BOM because I knew it was going to involve Dresdens. I have never done them before and was excited to learn. Way back in the beginning of this class (don't forget you can join the class for free, forever, any time by clicking on the link to the right ---->) I purchased the
Easy Dresden Ruler as suggested in the course materials but never even opened the packaging until now!
The block is really simple to make using the ruler and so much fun! I love how the blades look side-by-side and even though some people had a bit of trouble getting their Dresden fan to lay flat, mine seemed to go together without a hitch!
I followed Amy's lead and appliqued the plate onto the background fabric using a zig-zag stitch and, other than a few wonkily-placed zags, it turned out pretty good!
The second block is a more modern way of using the Dresden blades. I was out of the red fabric that Amy used so I chose a pretty purple from the Boho collection. My centre circle was not quite as round as the first block but will do. I think this block looks really cool - almost like a purple candy.
Both these blocks were pretty easy and since I don't have any new quilting project started (yet! I'm going to start the "Beyond Machine Quilting" project for my newest Craftsy class next!) I was able to get them done right away. Only 3 months left and we begin putting our blocks together in a quilt. I hope Amy (who is expecting twins - I KNOW how that feels!) can make it to the end!
In the meantime, I may play around some more with the Easy Dresden ruler since it came with lots of instructions/suggestions and a pattern as well! I will have to experiment further...
