It is very intimidating when you are a non-sewer and thinking about adding a zipper to your project. I wanted to try so I used the technique shown by Vanessa in the video below.
I just bought a zipper for under a dollar and used some scrap fabric to assemble this little wristlet pouch. I mainly wanted to throw it together and see how the zipper was attached. It only took a small part of the afternoon to do it.
I looked at the directions in my sewing machine manual for using the zipper foot and it was clear as mud to me. It involved basting and all kinds of steps so Vanessa's method seemed much easier. I did try to use my zipper foot but I don't get how it is helpful over a regular foot. I will have to research that more if I decide to use a zipper again...and maybe get some one-on-one instruction from the local sewing teacher.
My pouch turned out looking somewhat like a pouch (click to see the photo larger)...and the basic method did work. I have some problems...the end of the zipper does not reach the end of the pouch, it isn't perfectly centred or even attached on one corner, and I added the wristlet part on the wrong side. My daughter still took the pouch and will use it to store her thread. My method of impatient and rushed testing gets that first try out of the way - I just need to know roughly what is going to happen and then I will be more confident and careful when I do the 'real' thing! When I want to learn something new I want to do it now!
