Non-stick Pans

  There is a concern about the safety of non-stick pans and the emission of toxic fumes when they are heated to high temperatures.  This is particularly dangerous if you have pet birds and the use of these coated pans should be avoided.  If you do choose to purchase non-stick pans, note that they should not be pre-heated, should be used with low-to-medium heat, and food and oil should not be allowed to burn.  Also, when the coating becomes scratched and worn it is time to replace your pans.  Not only is the non-stick performance hindered by an uneven surface, but small particles of the coating can be released into food.  These worn skillets should be discarded.  New ones are quite affordable and with proper care, and the use of plastic utensils, will last for months.  Better yet, consider using an alternative such as baked enamel cookware, stainless steel, or good old-fashioned cast iron!
